03/18/2003: "I'm not sure..."

I want to watch a war on tv. Sounds like Fox's latest effort. "Next on FOX! Gulf War II, The Search for Saddam!" And americans will be able to call a special toll-free number and vote on which Iraqi soldier dies next. From what I've read, journalists from all over the world will be going in with the soldiers and utilising modern technology to broadcast from the front lines as things happen. Is that a good thing or not? I just don't know. It just seems like it will add to the desensitization of graphic violence. People have been conditioned to view violence on tv or in films as 'not real', and I don't think showing the war on television will do much to change that aspect. We aren't going to connect with it because it's on tv. Or will we? Will the knowledge that these are real events happening in almost real-time shock us into finally realising what an awful business war is. It's not Hollywood out there, it's someone's son or daughter.

Ugh, enough of that.

That "real-time" coverage will come to a screeching halt as soon as something bad happens to the "good guys".

History is written by the winners, and the politicians of this country are so arrogant and cock-sure of victory that they're happy to the media start writing the new history before the war even starts.
