Well, it took me all bleedin' day to do it because I'm so indecisive when it comes to layouts, but I did it. Life Online will now run under new software and can be read here. This page you're reading right now will no longer be updated. I wanted to say a big thank you to Blogger.com because I still think it's excellent software for beginners and for advanced users and if it wasn't for Blogger, I'd never have gotten into keeping a journal.
Anyway, I feel like I'm saying goodbye when I really just moved. Sheesh. Anyway visit http://www.ukmelia.com/lifeonline from now on to read new stuff.
Byeeeeee!

:: 8:41 AM ::
Ok, I've decided to *gulp* stop using blogger.com software for this blog. I'm going to make the move and use greymatter instead. Someone once told me (on TCZ I think) that I should use it instead of blogger, and I totally scoffed at the very idea. Now I'm a convert and I apologise to whomever it was I laughed at. You were right.
I think I held on to this layout and this software because I was afraid of losing nearly a year's worth of journal, but I've learned so much since I first started doing this and I feel more confident. So here goes nothing.

:: 2:21 PM ::
So a blog is not a blog until you've done one of those bazillion-question quizzes all about yourself. I just did one for my hidden blog that was about 61 questions and man are my fingers tired. It's hell talking about yourself for any length of time (unless you're a complete narcissist of course) and I don't think I'll do that again for a while. If you want to check it out, you'll have to dig for the journal. Basically my hidden journal's just a diary kind of thing with no set theme per se, whereas this one is more about what happens to me online. Somewhere on the ukmelia.com site there's a hidden link to it. And I don't know why I have made it hidden other than I just wanted to give people something to do and to drive people like Daniella nuts. It's really nothing special anyway and the only people who'd remotely want to read it are probably family or friends wondering if I'm talking about them.
Speaking of blogs, this one is approaching its one-year anniversary! I'm shocked, really. I've never managed to keep any sort of journal for very long because I have a short attention span and I get bored easily. But I think having this online has helped me keep up with it, as well as knowing there are actually people who read it from time to time. Go figure. Anyway, it's been a lot of fun and I look forward to more. I have to say though that I will probably make a move from Blogger to Greymatter for the journaling software, simply because Blogger can be so tempermental when it comes to publishing. I don't know how many times I've written volumes, only to lose it all when I hit the Post & Publish button. Highly annoying that is. So I've learned to highlight and copy everything before clicking P&P, just in case.
I'm boring myself now, I'd better stop rambling. Til next time...

Today I'm going to write about my town, and the large contingent of racist, bigoted, narrow-minded idiots that live here. I read (and occasionally post) on my city newspaper's forums and let's just say that there are people there that are enough to put you off your lunch. Here's a few examples of their fine, conservative minds (I'm not putting names to quotes):
In regards to Jesica, the hispanic girl who had the wrong organs transplanted: 1. Some deserving AMERICAN family will not receive those transplants or any other organs. 2. They entered the country ILLEGALLY.
Just get out of my country.
I understand why you paid a smuggler to get you and your ailing daughter medical care, but you have now proven how selfish and ungrateful you are by refusing to give back what 2 AMERICAN kids could have received.To give these organs back would be the least that you could do. Next time, just take your daughter to the "Pancho Villa Medical Center" in Mexico City.
This one is in response to a member, who is hispanic, and who does post argument-proving comments and could arguably be just as bigoted as the caucasion counterparts, but this kind of response, I think, is just pathetic:
Since when do your people vote? You have to be a citizen to vote. Your illegals can't help your cause, except maybe the 56 runts you wrote about. That was 56 wasn't it? Your females spit those suckers out like gerbils or something? Maybe you meant 5 or 6. I shouldn't be surprised, your typing skills couldn't be any better than your spelling skills, now could it? You and your standard six years of education. No wonder you are such idiots. That's why your homeland is a toilet, that is why your people will never make anything of themselves, that's why you will lose your cause to take the U.S.
Maybe we'll put you and yours in red jackets and have you march in a straight line. We'll wear our blue jackets again, and pick you off like ducks on water. We did it before, just ask the British.
That's just a sample of it. it gets much worse, believe me. I may be (according to their favourite labels) a 'bleeding heart, PC Libbie' or whatever but it just pisses me off that no real discussion can ever happen there on real issues without the thread turning into a useless slagging match. If they aren't attacking a member's race, they are attacking the member's looks/personality (without knowing who they really are). It's just sad.
Anyway just need a bit of a rant :)

I love referrer stats, I really do. For anyone unfamiliar with website statistics, the referrer stats tell you what search engine people used to find you, and what keywords they typed in. Sometimes the keywords crack me up :) The following are words some people have searched on and found themselves here at my journal:
"drinking nude" via Google. (Everyone should do it!) "slew popups porn" via Google. (Yeah! Slew porn popups!!!) "why do i have to reboot every two days" again, Google. (Um because you're computer is screwed?) "walmart rant crowded" via Yahoo (Someone must have been looking for other wallyworld haters :) "nude sunbathing Bournemouth" via MSN. (Well who wouldn't sunbathe nude in Bournemouth?) "peter jackson's home address" via Google. (If I knew that one do you think I'd be sitting here writing a blog?)
Those are just a few. I'll post more as I find them :)

Well it's about time Dave Barry got a blog. Dave Barry's Blog. In case you live under a rock or something, Dave Barry's probably one of the finer humour columnists in America. I've read his stuff for years, online and off - even bought a couple of his books - oh AND I watched that tv series they made based on his life. Anyway I just saw his blog listed in Blogger.com's 'recently noticed' blog section and I'm so chuffed :) Woohoo! Read it, live it, love it.

Please save me from myself. I just bought a replica of Sting, Frodo's sword used in the movie from Ebay. Not the mega-expensive one mind you. Just a cheap knockoff, but a sword (well for Hobbit-sized people anyway) nonetheless. I feel a bit silly about it, but I'm also kind of chuffed to have it. I love film memorabilia - cheap knockoff or otherwise - and would love to start a collection of my own with props and replicas and all that. So I'm starting off small for now but someday I hope to have a nice array of things. And Ebay is going to be the bane of my existence I can tell.
Hmmm. I've just been told I'm a game addiction freak on TCZ and I'm not allowed to help test a new one because I'd never leave the place. *phhhhbts* to them. Geez, you win TCZ Bingo 9 times and they think you're an addict. :D hehehe. I see how they are.
I bought my daughter's birthday present yesterday. Her birthday's not until July and I have no idea how I'm going to keep it a secret that long but I'll just have to manage. I figured that since the store was having such a good sale on mountain bikes, and I have some extra cash right now, I'd just get her one and hide it at the grandparent's until her big 1-2. She really needs a new bike anyway. Her old one is a kids bike that has girly streamers on the handlebars and her poor knees whack against them all the time. She's going to be an 'official pre-teen' in July, and has to look the part :) *sigh* They grow so fast.
Think I'll sign off for now. Need to get to work on my new freelance site :D Cheerio.

:: 11:20 AM ::
I am slacking again. I actually started to write in it the other day until i realised I had nothing interesting to say. I probably still don't but I'm feeling guilty for not writing. I'm still on a high right now after finding out a bid I put in for a freelance job was accepted. I'm so damn chuffed! I was asked at the end of last year if I'd be interested in doing a website for a local chapter of a nursing health group and of course I said yes I was. So they asked me to outline costs etc. and then I didn't hear from them for the longest time, so I figured it fell through. But I got an email earlier this week saying my bid was accepted and I'll be meeting with them next week to get started. Woohoo yay me :). On top of *that* money, I received my Federal tax refund today (bless the IRS!) so I am off on a bit of a spree this weekend. Well, when I say spree, I mean that my daughter's getting some new outfits and I'm getting a new pair of shoes. Woohoo again! I love shopping.
What else have I been up to... nothing much really, just putting in some time on the Picture Show. I decided that as much as I loved using Greymatter for it, it just wasn't feasible if the site was going to grow and allow multiple users to post stuff. It's a great blog tool, but it's not so great at organizing sections. So I installed Postnuke and now have my own portal site that turned out quite well :) And I just want to say a huge gigantic THANK YOU to the people behind this wonderful software and for keeping it free. So to the peeps at Postnuke and Phpbb (Excellent forum software), thanks very much :)
In other news, I heard the Placebo public forums were back. Whoopdeedoo. A lot of my friends are glad to have it back and for them, I'm happy and hope they have as great a time as I did (up to a point) there. Personally, I've moved on to bigger and better things so to those of you lurking about here hoping to see me "whining" about being banned from the forums - it ain't gonna happen. Get over it already and get on with your lives ;)
Well I've got a meeting in 15 minutes and I still have to go grab some lunch so I'm off. Til next time!

:: 6:11 PM ::
It really sucks when TCZ is down. I've been spoiled because our server's had such a long uptime. And before that when it crashed it would only be for a few minutes at a time. Now it's been down all weekend and I'm bored. I had a good bingo card too. Hehehe. From what I can gather, we might have been affected by that SQL virus that hit the Net this weekend. Though, we are on a Linux server, I've been told. I don't know - I'm not a techie :)
Anyway, so I've had to find other things to do. However, nasty weather and zero money equals not a whole lot of things to choose from. Plus I'm still moody and when I'm like that I'm likely to just watch movies until I fall asleep which is basically what I've done. The kidlet went out to play in the snow though - she seems to enjoy trying to make an igloo :) It's not going very well though. Right now it looks more like a miniature of Helms Deep. When she's not in the snow, she's on the phone with her friends. I swear she's turning into a teenager far sooner than she's supposed to. She's only 11, but she's on the phone all the time, she sleeps in until noon on weekends, she takes hours in the bath... It's too soon I tell you! She does still watch Rugrats though, so I won't freak out just yet :)
Well I can't think of anything exciting to write about so I'll give it up for now.

:: 12:05 PM ::
Well that was relatively painless. I received an email from my host telling me that instead of free hosting with limited space that I was putting up with, I would now be able to pay them every month for the same limited space. So I promptly said 'Umm, no.' and left them. But where to go. I'm not a rich girl so I had to find something affordable and lo and behold my most wonderful and darling Kat says, 'Ratty can host you.' To which I said, 'Oh no I can't impose like that. He's already hosting my forums and I couldn't ask for more than that.' And she says in reply, 'Oh pshaw. He's doing it.' To which I say, 'You are the coolest Rat ever Paul :).' So after working out how to switch my nameservers, I am now resting comfortably in my new space and the move wasn't very painful - just a minor glitch with the blog that is now sorted out and I'm a happy camper.
Not a whole lot going on beyond that. I think I have a case of the winter blahs and pretty much everything irritates the hell out of me. I'm moody and grumpy most of the time, bordering on really sad if I let myself stop to think about things for too long. So I keep myself distracted with movies, web stuff, forums, reading etc etc. Anything to keep my brain occupied on mundane things.
Oh I had a long rant worked out about the inordinate amount of wretched people there are online but I can't be bothered.

I just love the Internet. Of course I do, I wouldn't be here writing this if I didn't. Today I received my W-2, and tonight I e-filed my taxes :) Cross your fingers everything went right. Apparently the IRS has to 'approve' of them. But wow, if they do, I'll have a very nice tax refund (barring evil student loan nazis lurking near the bank ready to snatch refunds out from under your very nose). We shall see. Anyway, I've not got much to talk about this time around. I'm still moving right along with the movie site. I'm starting to trickle into the search engines already. Someone did a search on 'Billy Boyd Shirtless' (Billy Boyd plays Pippin in LotR) and my site popped up. Not that I have any pics of Mr. Boyd sans shirt mind you. I only have those three words in the site somewhere, not necessarily together. Weird how search engines work. I get the strangest queries from Google and Yahoo on this very blog. "Peter Jackson Home Address" turns up this blog :) Poor Peter, he's got his very own stalker now.
I'm fascinated looking at web stats. There is someone who comes here from St. Andrews Uni in the UK quite often and I'm curious as to who it is and how they found the place. Prince Willliam goes there you know. Hehehe.
Short blog methinks. Eyelids are dropping and bed beckons.

:: 9:17 PM ::
Eep been neglecting this a bit. Sorry. I've just been so busy with The Picture Show. Yes I know I keep shamelessly plugging it, but who cares :) this is my site and I'm not going to yell at me for continually plugging it. Hehehe. Anyway, I've gotten a couple more people to start adding their reviews or movie news and I'm really enjoying reading what they write. Oh and someone joined the forum today that I didn't really know which I thought was pretty cool :) I added a feature to it called spoiler tags. I figured it was perfect for a movie forum as people are bound to discuss plotlines etc. With this little hack, anyone not wishing to see spoilers will only see a black boc. The hack creates the black box with black text and the only way to read it is to highlight it with your mouse. I think it's nifty :)
So yeah I've been messing with hacks, fixing pages, rearranging my bedroom, posting in forums, doing research, sifting through jumbled notes from department directors who don't understand the words 'electronic format'. Busy busy. I did go and see that Two Towers one last time before it leaves the theatre. We watched the extended version of Fellowship, then went straight to the cinema which was kind of cool. I'm going to do that again when Return of the King comes out. Yes, I am sad. I don't care, I'm happy.
My next project is to tackle Access. Rick just mailed me a couple of manuals for it that should help me out. I wanted to learn it so I could find an easier way to maintain my movie collection. I'm not a very technical person so I've been doing it the hard way and just using tables for it, but when I buy a new movieit's a big pain in the ass to add it alphabetically. Wish me luck - learning from books is difficult for me. I wish I had Rick's ability to absorb technical manuals but I don't.
I'm rambling now, which is a sign I should stop. So I will.

Hmmm Blogger vs. Greymatter. Decisions, decisions. Greymatter's no longer updated, apart from hacks people come up with. Blogger I bet will eventually become a pay service. Greymatter is a pain to install on win2k servers (but it can be done!), Blogger occasionally loses all your hard work when you hit the publish button. Pros and cons either way. I think I'll just keep using both and stop thinking out loud about it :)
I bought a domain today, wheeeeee. I'm going to transfer the film project I've been working on to it now that I can expand it. It's going to be 'thepictureshow.org' :) So my email will be melia@thepictureshow.org. Hehehe, I love it. While I waited for the domain to filter out into the Net, I redid my daughter's site. It was very little girly before, now it's more of a pre-teen look. The kid likes it loads so I'm pleased. Sweetiepete.com if you're curious. And please sign her guestbook - it makes her happy :)
I don't know what has sparked off this latest spat of new websites/redesigns etc. I suppose I could say I'm just keeping in practice, learning new things to help me at work. Yeah, that sounds good. But really it's more like I really love doing it. I love getting all frustrated and irritated when i can't work out some bit of code, or can'tmake something work on a site, and finding out I've forgotten a simple '/' or something and bam - suddenly it all works. It's quite a rush :)

Cruella: "http://www.ukmelia.com/blogs/2002_12_29_archive ROFLMAO, now she's going on about how 'shy' she is in real life? Yeah, right, I sort of guessed that? If she's in any way 'shy', I'm the Queen of England!!!"
Suzanne: "Umm... Didn't YOU say that you were shy in real life?"
Cruella: "Yes, but that's different Suzanne!!! I'm sorry but there's no way that woman could be SHY!!!"
*waves to Creepella* Nice to know you're still skulking about and reporting back to your cronies ;)
Anyway, been working some more on Down in Front. I linked my entire movie collection to the Internet Movie Database, took ages but it's done now. I'm really pleased with the way that site's turning out. No doubt my little fans will be infesting that site aswell but what can you do? You'd think women at least a decade older than me would be a little more mature but I guess not. Sad comment on society today really. These women have never met me, indeed one of them I think I only talked to once. They hate by association I guess. I haven't given any of them a single thought in months, until my referrer stats gave away their hidey-hole for spewing abuse.
One of them even says: "I donīt understand that woman. If she doesnīt want any troublemakers on her board, she should just make the board private". So, in other words, if I want to have a place where my friends and I can insult people behind their backs, I should set my board private. *rolleyes* Nevermind that I left everything open to all because my board is *not* strictly for displaced Silver Rocket members but open to anyone willing to come for general discussion. I removed threads that got a bit out of hand regarding the closure of SR because I didn't want a tense atmosphere.
Apparently I didn't delete them fast enough though and I began having a flood of idiots coming there to stir up old arguments and fights. So I removed them aswell. Then I find the crap posted by Cruella and her ilk and it just boggles my mind that these people are *still* carrying on about everything. And being so childish about it to boot. Grow up Cruella/Suzanne et. al. You're old enough (by far) to know better.
That's it. That should be enough to fuel another thread or two on your little forum. But I'm done. I'm over it all now, I suggest you lot get over it too and find something constructive to do.

:: 10:47 PM ::
Well I did it. My Placebo site is no more, boohoo. The only downside to that is that I was linked on so many fan sites and band listings and had quite a heavy flow of traffic there. Oh well. Sorry, Just didn't want to run it anymore. I still have all the files though so if anyone needs something, they can just email and ask :) I was a bit naughty though and put up a redirect to my new project: Down In Front. I need an outlet for my movie hobby and this is what came out. I like it and even if no one reads it, I'll have a repository for everything I love about the movies. So, I'll get some lost Placebo fans for a while but I'm sure they'll find other sites to fuel their obsession.
Found out tonight that I'm being slagged off by that same old contingent of people from the Placebo forums. I can't believe that after all this time they still enjoy being so insulting towards someone they've never even met (and some of them I've never even spoken to online! It's insane!). But that's the risk you take when you interact with people behind a monitor rather than face to face. I think it empowers certain types of people to behave in ways they'd never dream of irl because they know we'll never meet in person. Me, I can't do that. Who I am online is pretty much who I am irl. I was even told that by my friend I talk to, but haven't ever met. I was talking about how I'm pretty shy irl (who on the net isn't, really?) and he told me that it comes across online. Sort ofshocked me, that did. All this time I felt sort of bold. But I do know that it's not in my nature to go around insulting people I don't even know and I suppose that's why it boggles my mind when it happens to me.
Anyway, I've spent hours looking at code and setting up a Greymatter blog for my film site (Apologies to Blogger, but I couldn't get it to ftp for me after two days of trying). So I've had to learn how to work with cgi and configuring paths, and then sorting out a layout etc, and I've gone cross-eyed. Time for bed methinks. Gnighty!
